The television viewing experience is about to take a leap into full immersion. DIRECTV has listed a native app on the Meta Quest store targeting spring 2026, marking one of the first times a traditional live TV provider has ventured into the virtual reality space.

What we know so far
According to the app description, it will provide access to live sports, local channels, and on-demand content from an immersive space inside the headset. There are no concrete details yet on features, pricing, or an exact launch date, but the mere fact that DIRECTV is developing a native Quest app is already news.
Most streaming services already available in virtual reality are limited to playing 2D content on a virtual screen. The DIRECTV case is different because it explicitly talks about an experience designed "in an immersive space," which could imply something beyond a simple floating screen.
Almost uncharted territory
Until now, traditional TV providers have been reluctant to enter VR. Netflix abandoned its native Meta Quest app in 2024, pushing users back to the browser experience. Most people who want to watch live content from their headset rely on PC streaming tools or built-in browsers.
DIRECTV taking this step signals that the consumer headset market is mature enough to attract investment from entertainment heavyweights. If the app works well and delivers a smooth experience, it could open the door for other providers to follow suit.
What this means for Meta Quest users
For owners of a Quest 3, 3S, or even Quest 2, having access to live sports without needing another device is an interesting shift. Imagine watching a football match or the finale of your favorite series as if you were in a private cinema, no matter where you are physically.
We will have to wait and see whether the experience ultimately meets expectations or ends up being just another screen within the VR environment. But the fact that DIRECTV is willing to try is already an indicator of where the market is heading.
